据美国网站“校园改革”（Campus Reform）报道，哈佛大学2018年的捐赠基金，达到383亿美元，超过世界上一半国家所拥有的财富。
而哈佛大学并非美国唯一一所“富可敌国”的大学。耶鲁大学、斯坦福大学、普林斯顿大学、麻省理工、宾夕法尼亚大学、德克萨斯大学体系、密歇根大学、以及西北大学(分数线,专业设置)等美国大学拥有的财富均超过了世界上的许多国家。
"“America‘s public schooling system may be in trouble， but its top universities are anything but，” said a story by Stacker， which compared the multibillion endowments of 50 American colleges to the “total wealth” of world nations as estimated by Credit Suisse。"

"Private institutions often use nonprofit status to avoid tax， but a provision of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will levy a small tax."
